The Tomb houses 11 family members including John and Elizabeth and several of their nine children, though more are mentioned on the monument. Their second child was born and died during the voyage of the Second Fleet and young John died in England. The first James died and is buried at Elizabeth Farm, Parramatta. John Macarthur Senior died in the Cottage at Belgenny Farm following a long illness, while Elizabeth died in Sydney, at the home of her daughter, Emmeline Parker.
Access to the tomb was via a stairway at the front under the visible steps, joining the entrance to the tomb about 2.5m below ground level. The Tomb is about 2.2 meters high, as big as the visible concrete borders and is lined with bricks.
The grave with the sword is that of Brigadier General George Macarthur Onslow, who commanded Brigades of the Australia Light Horse. George served with gallantry in World War 1. He survived being shot in a skirmish in the Battle of Wellington Hill (in Palestine), returning to participate in the Battle of Beersheba. He built “Murrandah” which is now the Camden House Retirement Village. His wife Violet, buried beside him, lived to 102.
The linking of Macarthur and Onslow originated when the sole heir to the Macarthur estate, Elizabeth, (granddaughter to John and Elizabeth Macarthur) married Captain Arthur Onslow, thus becoming Mrs Arthur Onslow. In 1892 by virtue of Royal Letters Patent she assumed the additional surname of Macarthur and henceforth she and her children were known as Macarthur Onslow. Elizabeth’s eldest son, James then inherited the Estate but as his only son, James Arthur was disinherited the property passed to his daughter Helen. She married Sir Reginald Stanham (Paymaster General of the British Army during World War 2). Once again to retain the Macarthur name, Helen requested her only son, Quentin to become known as Macarthur Stanham. Today, Camden Park House and its surrounding is the private home of the Macarthur Stanham family. No more burials are permitted in the cemetery, but members of the family may be cremated, and their ashes deposited here.
The Following is a list of the names of those buried in the family cemetery. The first 11 are those buried in the vault. There is also a list of those to whom there is a memorial but who are not actually buried here.
